Thousand Islands, NY
OMG, beautiful. We made the decision to see the Thousand islands for at least one day before going to Kingston and so glad we did.
A stunning leisurely sightseeing cruise from Clayton around the north side (into Canadian waters) of Hill and Wellesley Islands to Thousand Islands Yacht Club just across the St Lawrence River from Alexandria Bay, NY. Unbelievable homes, thousands of islands and a different sight around every turn. Seems like there’s a dwelling on every rock, no matter the size. Look at the pics!
After we arrived we went to see Boldt Castle on Heart Island. We biked a whopping 0.83 miles to the Boldt Castle Yacht House to catch the shuttle over to Heart Island. We kind of said, “We’ve seen castles before,” but changed our mind and it was well worth it. Long story short, George Boldt grew up in the gilded era, went from a kitchen worker to owning hotels culminating with the Waldorf-Astoria in Manhattan. Became a millionaire and built Boldt Castle for his wife who, tragically, died before the castle was finished and construction stopped. Boldt never visited Heart Island again. Castle went into disrepair until the Thousand Island Bridge Authority took it over and restored it. Still restoring but it was amazing. When they stopped construction some of the materials (such as the crown molding) were simply crammed in the basement or the kitchen, still in their shipping crates.
Hopped into the pool at the marina, enjoyed cocktails and dinner on the aft deck looking at the sunset in best evening we’ve had so far. We love Thousand Islands and have only been here two days. What a great day. Kingston, Ontario tomorrow for three nights.
