Another stop at Lock 22 where we stopped for two nights on the way north. We like this lock for the long wall, afternoon shade, quiet lake view and serenity. We didn’t do much other than hang out and there were no other boats.
It is a nice stop after the five locks from Young’s Point and a quiet alternative to Peterborough which is very busy and requires transiting three more locks. Each lock adds about 30 minutes to the trip which, in this case, turned our 8 mile jaunt into a more than three hour slog in the sun. The lock tenders are WONDERFUL and do everything they can to assist with getting our lines run through the cables, talking up the next town, and letting the next lock know we’re coming down. But, one thing they can’t do is speed up the lock, so there you go.
While we were on this short trip, we passed a house by the side of the channel that seemed to be the favorite roost of every seagull within 100 kilometers! We’re certain the homeowners are happy about that!
We also had a Piper Cub on floats taxi out right in front of us and take off. Second time we’ve seen that and it’s fun to watch.
Providing the afternoon’s entertainment to Charlotte was a black lab whose owner was throwing a ball out into the water near the boat. We heard a huge splash and saw the lab swimming out to fetch the ball, then paddle back to shore, run around a bit, shake the water off then drop the ball at the owner’s foot to do it all over again. Charlotte was enthralled!
Fun day and nice night.
