Marlboro, NY
Left early and as we pulled out could see the steam from the heat of the morning rising from the lying on top of the water. That should have been our first clue we were in for a scorcher.
To be clear - at 8 knots, there was not one bit of wind on the fly bridge - nada!!!
But, the scenery was beautiful and was all that kept our minds off the heat.
We traveled on a narrower part of the Hudson, and all we could see on either side were trains that seemed like they we were balancing on tracks on the edge of the water, and the rolling, vibrantly green hills of southern New York that evoked the feeling of being wrapped up in a blanket of green velvet - maybe not the best analogy to make on a 90 degree day (felt like 105 with the humidity!) or possibly we were hallucinating from being close to heat stroke. And of course, sprinkled in between the trees here and there were the billion dollar “weekend” getaways offering respite to those poor, weary city dwellers (jealousy on overload).
As we passed the US Military Academy at West Point perched high on the hillside, Will couldn’t resist blowing the horn and yelling GO NAVY - BEAT ARMY!!!!! Also saw helicopter taking off…and wondered if it was Trump back for another impressive (impressively STUPID) speech?
Further up the river we passed the large Bannerman Castle ruin on Pollepel Island that stems from Revolutionary War days, positioned on a hill atop a small island, flanked by two gun turrets. The Patriots used it to keep the British from going further up the Hudson. Interesting read if you’re a history buff.
Tolerated the heat (barely) and stopped for the night at Marlboro Yacht Club only to discover the pool was closed but they had a bar on site and welcomed you with a free drink token - can’t argue with that! Met some really nice fellow boaters headed the same way who are renting a car for the week to see the area. There is plenty of history in this area of the Hudson. Fingers crossed this heat wave ends by Wednesday. Whew!!!
