Trenton, ON, CN
We decided to stay put in Trenton one more day due to the high winds and potential thunder storms. It’s been very hot and humid and making adjustments to travel plans for weather - especially high winds - is just a part of this type of travel. Every evening about 6:00 PM there is a standing docktails event at most yacht club/marina’s club house’s along the Great Loop. This gives those traveling the Loop the opportunity to share experiences and plans for days ahead. Last night a lot of discussion was on the projected high winds, and so you listen, review the weather charts and data on line and make your call. Since the only plans we have currently are to be back in the Thousand Islands by Sept 1, we can be flexible - and that’s a good feeling - not that boating in 30 mph winds and dodging bolts of lightening in open waters isn’t fun - NOT!
This afternoon Will rode a bike about two miles from where we are docked to look at our first Canadian lock (Lock 1). Having not been through a lock in Canada yet, it’s always good to see what you are up against since we have read the Canadian lock keepers have their own way of doing things but, are very helpful. Also, many of the locks on the Trent Severn have manually operated gates on one or both ends. Lock 1 has manual gates at the north end and you can see in the video below the lock tenders operating the gates. After the lock, Will rode up (with significant assistance from the electric bike) to a Trenton hilltop with a memorial and a spectacular view of the town, bay and canal.
On a fun note, there is a summer festival starting today in the town center and fireworks and drone show tonight, assuming the rain or wind doesn’t get in the way 🎉- so that should also be a highlight!
Another entertaining aspect of this marina is being able to see (and hear) Canadian Air Force planes take off and land above our boat. Since we are literally two miles from the AF base, we have a front row seat! Who doesn’t love that ❤️- and as the saying goes “jet noise - the sound of freedom”.
Tomorrow the weather is projected to be beautiful with light winds - so we should have a bit more excitement to share as we move on. We plan to dock on a wall on the canal tomorrow night so that is always an adventure. Can Ann get a line around a cleat fast enough to control the boat?!!? without hitting anything and using every inappropriate four letter word she knows???- More to come and fingers crossed.🤬
