Parry Sound, ON, CA
We’re sorry we missed you but after those 17 nights in Midland we are back on the water and now at Parry Sound, Ontario.
We left Midland on a calm morning, little wind but a bit hazy and made our way up the very scenic and rocky Georgian Bay Small Boat Channel for the 52-mile run to Parry Sound. Since it was a Saturday, and from our observations the Candians seem to be a party loving, fun in the sun group of people, on such a beautiful day, the waters were crazy busy with any kind of boat you can imagine. Jet-skiers a couple miles off shore, kayakers, speed boats, sail boats, and other trawlers all criss-crossing happily (and safely) just enjoying the day! Our heads were definitely on a swivel as we meandered through the water, squeezing through some very narrow channels with boats coming towards us from the other direction. No dozing off for us on that stretch!
We have also determined that Canadians seem to build “cottages” on any rock they can find above the water. We passed one house built on top of nothing but a big, flat, bare rock and could see its occupants enjoying the day on the rock’s “beach.” There are way too many to capture in a photo, but this one stood out to us. Trees - who needs em!
We couldn’t resist stopping at the “world famous” Henry’s Restaurant on San Souci Island around lunch time. The only way to get there is by boat or seaplane and there were some of each. The dock was packed but they had room for at least three big boats, including us, and before we could say “Dockage for one Please”, two more big boats pulled in behind us and the docks were full. A 30-minute wait for a table didn’t seem long as we chatted it up with some of our new dock neighbors to pass the time. Henry’s is known for its amazingly light and fresh fish and chips, (Don’t forget, Canada is part of the British Commonwealth) and it did not disappoint. The pickerel was mild, perfectly seasoned, and had just the right amount of breading and crispiness! We were in a bit of a food coma the remainder of the afternoon, but was a great stop and a nice way to break up a 7 plus hour trip for the day.
We pulled into Big Sound Marina at Parry Sound with a great view of the long and towering Canadian Pacific Railway trestle running across the Seguin River Valley. As the evening progressed, there was no shortage of trains that seemed to be miles long, crossing the trestle.
Looking forward to several days here.
